What to ask your doctor
The Menopause transition can be a very confusing time. It’s never too early to begin having these conversations with your doctor. Perimenopause and menopause affect each woman differently, and can cause a variety of symptoms. If you feel like you might be entering perimenopause or something just doesn’t feel right, then speak with your healthcare provider. When visiting your doctor, go in prepared with specifics.
Instead of saying “I feel terrible,” use your tracker to say: “My hot flashes happen 8-10 times daily, are most intense between 2-4pm, and wake me up 3 nights per week.”
Key Questions to Ask:
- “What treatment options do you recommend for my specific symptoms?” (Don’t accept “this is normal” as the only answer)
- “Can you explain the risks and benefits of hormone therapy for someone with my health history?”
- “What lifestyle changes might help with my most bothersome symptoms?”
- “Should I have any specific tests done?”
- “When should I follow up, and what changes should prompt me to call sooner?”
Advocate for Yourself:
If your doctor dismisses your concerns or suggests you “just deal with it,” ask for a referral to a menopause specialist or gynecologist with menopause training. You deserve a healthcare provider who takes your symptoms seriously and offers solutions.
How to Use Your Symptom Tracker
Track for 2-4 weeks before your appointment to identify patterns and provide your doctor with concrete data rather than vague descriptions.
- Rate symptom intensity (1-5 scale)
- Note timing and triggers when possible
- Include sleep quality, energy levels, and mood
- Track your menstrual cycle (even if irregular)
- Record any remedies you tried and their effectiveness
Look for patterns: Do symptoms worsen at certain times of the month? Are they triggered by stress, lack of sleep, or specific foods? This information helps your doctor create a targeted treatment plan.
Stop struggling to remember how you’ve been feeling or leaving appointments wishing you’d explained things better. This tracker helps you identify patterns, communicate clearly with your healthcare provider, and get the support you deserve.
